Blooming Whiteway began as a Front Garden Festival in 2017.

Since then we’ve grown in all sorts of ways. Our focus now is around citizen action in response to the climate and ecological emergencies. Action on our doorsteps, at street/community/neighbourhood scale, with an emphasis on soil, water, food. and ecology.

Based on the Whiteway estate we sit between Bath City Farm and open countryside - with our park Whiteway Green at the heart of the estate.

At Blooming Whiteway we see great potential in gardens, private or otherwise, to increase biodiversity, improve food security and bring neighbours together.

We’re keen to grow in and out of gardens and tell the stories of the wildlife who benefit from abundant spaces, along with stories of species that could thrive again if we can tackle nature depletion.

Including humans.

Who do you worked with?

  • Since 2017 we have worked with Bath City Farm,  Vegmead, Twerton Infants School, Roundhill Primary School, Avon Wildlife Trust, RSPB, Hilliers, BathCity FC, Southdown Methodist Church, More Trees, DNAarts and Bathscape - to name a few.

  • We work with all sorts including other community groups, climate activists, artists, growers, performers and wildlife fans - we are well networked and advocate for the area in conversations across the city.

  • We have links with Bath Area Growers a group which advocates and campaigns for growing and growers in Bath and beyond.

  • We have an ongoing collaboration with More Trees - we manage Barrowmead Community Tree Nursery, just off Rush Hill - one of the nurseries in the More Trees expanding network of volunteer run sites.

  • We are part of the fabulous Twerton and Whiteway Community Network

    How are you funded?

  • We’ve been funded by Kew Gardens, Your Park, Tesco Bags of Help, Curo, BANES, WECCA and by donations - we are really resourceful - growing our own plants to give away, sourcing second hand tools and equipment.

    What do you do?

  • Our ethos is around citizen action- on climate and ecological breakdown - on our doorsteps. Community and neighbourhood scale action on soil, water, food and wildlife.

  • We provide free plants, tools, resources, seeds and advice to support residents develop their gardens.

  • We run free events in all sorts of venues giving participants the chance to grow and make.

  • We lead walks for the Bathscape Walking Festival and workshops at Bath Festivals and other events.

  • We have run Front Garden Festivals. Nearly 30 Whiteway residents shared their gardens for the Blooming Whiteway Front Garden Festival 2017, in 2018 is was 40. Nearly 40 residents took part in 2022’s version - Garden’s Alive.

  • We look after one of the community tree nursery sites for More Trees Banes- just off of Rush Hill. See What’s on for how to get involved.

    What projects do you run?

  • We are planning to launch OVERGROWN - a new garden club soon - so watch this space

  • In 2020 we joined forces with More Trees Banes to take on the day to day running of the first ever Community Tree Nursery in Bath - you can volunteer with us.

  • In 2021 we received funding from Your Park to run Park Life - regular sessions focused on developing two areas in Whiteway Green (formerly Rosewarn Park).
One the Memorial Garden supporting the Whiteway Community Association. The other, the Peace Path, a wild area in a tucked away corner where we’ve installed a new bug hotel.

  • We look after the Mount Road Planters for BANES - watering, planting and caring for these very public plants all year round

  • We were collaborators for the Mount Road site for the Bee Bold Banes project which improved the site for pollinators.

    How can I get involved?

  • We’re always heartened to meet fellow gardeners, growers and neighbours who care for the natural world, who are working in any way - small or large, with care for the wild. We’d love to hear what you are doing.

  • If you’d like to work alongside us there are practical sessions we can tell you about - or we can share our approach if that is helpful - you may be thinking of setting up something in your area.

  • We dedicate time connecting with growers, researchers, ecologists and others to get a sense of how the response to the climate emergency is evolving. If you’d like to connect with this network let us know.

  • If you are an avid propagator, have spare tools, bulbs etc to share then we have a Free Plant Stand where we give stuff away

  • But we also have our hands in the soil most days - and there are various planty opportunities - just contact us for a chat.

  • Look out for the launch of OVERGROWN Garden Club in WInter 2024-5
